Introducing CBoxRun

October 17, 2010 Leave a comment

CBoxRun is a lightweight DOSBox front end for Windows.  It’s meant to be easy to use for DOSBox newbies, but it has some features that power users may also appreciate.  Here’s a partial feature list:

  • A friendly grid selection interface

Details View

  • A wizard-based add/edit interface, featuring easy, one-step retrieval of Wikipedia screenshots and game information for almost 1500 games

Edit Wizard

  • Screenshot and Box Art views

Config Editor

  • Easy custom config file creation – start with the default config or with the config file from another game

  • Simple portability options – relative paths are supported, and CBoxRun can run from a flash drive

  • Quick and easy installation – no installer needed (although one is available if you prefer an install .exe)

CBoxRun is currently in alpha test, and more features will be added before its public release.  We will be working with a small set of alpha testers to fix any bugs and build in any must-have features before releasing the program to the public.

Here are some of the things that aren’t supported yet in the Alpha release:

  • Serial port settings
  • Hard disk and floppy drive images
  • D-Fend import
  • ZIP game storage
  • Multiple languages
  • Multiple versions of DOSBox

We have several other features in mind for future releases that we’re not ready to talk about just yet.  When released, CBoxRun will initially be closed source, but free to use under a Creative Commons license.  Stay tuned to this space for more information!
